Overview of the biggest mining dump trucks on the planet.

Dump trucks, also known as tipper trucks or damper trucks are heavy-duty vehicles used for moving dumps (landfills such as sand, gravel, or debris) from one point to another.

These trucks have an open-box bed that is fixed at the rear and fitted with hydraulic rams to lift the front to allow the dump to be discarded behind the vehicle at the site of delivery.

Dump trucks come in various configurations and sizes each designed to undertake a specific task in the mining and construction materials supply chains.

From the D8-774 Mining Truck to Belaz 75710, here are the world’s biggest trucks:

10. Komatsu 930E-4

Unveiled by Komatsu American Corp. in 2016, the Komatsu 930E-4 is the biggest electric drive rear dump truck from Komatsu. The truck, which has a payload capacity of 292 tonnes, is fitted with huge bucket shovels with a capacity of up to 76 cubic metres – making it ideal for large-scale mining operations.

The vehicle has a gross operating weight of 625 tonnes. Its loading height and width stand at 7.09m and 10.01m, respectively. The overall length of the truck is 15.60m.

The Komatsu 930E-4 comes with a four-cycle Komatsu SSDA18V170 diesel engine with a generating capacity of 2,700hp. It uses a GE dual IGBT AC electric drive system and runs at speeds of up to 64.5km/h.

9. Hitachi EH5000AC-3

Unveiled in 2012 at the MINExpo International 2012 in Las Vegas, Hitachi EH5000AC-3 is Hitachi’s biggest rigid frame dump truck with a payload capacity of 296 tonnes.

The vehicle has a gross operating weight of 551 tonnes. Its loading height and width stand at 7.41m and 8.60m, respectively. The overall length of the truck is 15.51m.

The Hitachi EH5000AC-3 comes with a Cummins QSKTT A60-CE diesel engine with a generating capacity of 2,850hp. It uses Hitachi’s IGBT AC electric drive system and runs at speeds of up to 56km/h.

8. Caterpillar 795F AC

The Caterpillar 795F AC is ranked eighth in the list of the world’s biggest trucks with a payload capacity of 313 tonnes. The vehicle has a gross operating weight of 628 tonnes.

Its loading height and width stand at 7.04m and 8.97m, respectively. The overall length of the truck is 15.14m.

7. Komatsu 960E-2

The Komatsu 960E-2 is the seventh largest truck in the world with a payload capacity of 327 tonnes. The vehicle has a gross operating weight of 576 tonnes. Its loading height and width stand at 7.14m and 9.19m, respectively. The overall length of the truck is 15.60m.

6. Belaz 75600

The Belaz 75600 is ranked sixth in the list of world’s biggest trucks with a payload capacity of 360 tonnes. The off-highway truck has gross operating weight of 617 tonnes. Its loading height and width stand at 7.47m and 9.60m, respectively. The overall length of the truck is 15.60m.

The Belaz 75600 comes with Cummins QSK78 or MTU 20V4000 diesel engines capable of delivering a maximum power output of 3,500hp or 3,755hp, respectively. It uses an AC electric drive system and runs at speeds of up to 64km/h.

5. Liebherr T 284

The Liebherr T 284 dump truck is the fifth biggest truck in the world with a payload capacity of 363 tonnes. The vehicle has a gross operating weight of 600 tonnes. Its loading height and width stand at 7.42m and 9.68m, respectively. The overall length of the truck is 15.69m.

The Liebherr T 284 comes with a 20-cylinder MTU 20V4000 C23 diesel engine with a gross power output of up to 3,750hp. It uses Hitachi’s IGBT AC electric drive system and runs at speeds of up to 64km/h.

4. Caterpillar 797F

The Caterpillar 797F, which has been operating since 2009, is Caterpillar’s latest model of the 797 series. It is ranked fourth in the list of the world’s biggest trucks with a payload capacity of 363 tonnes.

The vehicle has a gross operating weight of 688 tonnes. Its loading height and width stand at 6.52m and 9.75m, respectively. The overall length of the truck is 14.80m.

The Caterpillar 797F comes with a 20-cylinder Cat C175-20 ACERT diesel engine with a gross power output of 3,793 hp. It uses a hydraulic torque converter transmission and runs at speeds of up to 68km/h.

3. Komatsu 980E-4

The Komatsu 980E-4 electric-drive haul truck, with a payload capacity of 369 tonnes, is the largest Komatsu truck ever manufactured.

The vehicle has a gross operating weight of 625 tonnes. Its loading height and width stand at 8.0m and 10.0m, respectively. The overall length of the truck is 15.70m.

2. Belaz 75710

The Belaz 75710, with a payload capacity of 450 tonnes, topped the list of the world’s largest mining dump trucks for nearly five years before it was deposed by D8-774 Mining Truck in May 2018.

The vehicle has a gross operating weight of 810 tonnes. Its loading height and width stand at 8.16m and 9.87m, respectively. The overall length of the truck is 20.60m.

The Belaz 75710 comes with two 16-cylinder MTU DD16V4000 turbocharged diesel engines each with a gross power output of 2,300hp. It uses an electromechanical transmission powered by alternating current and runs at speeds of up to 64km/h.

1. D8-774 Mining Truck

The D8-774 Mining Truck, which was announced in May 2018 by Slovenian firm ETF Mining Equipment, is the largest dump truck in the world with a payload capacity of 774 tonnes.

The vehicle has a gross operating weight of 810 tonnes. Its loading height and width stand at 6.3m and 7.6m, respectively. The overall length of the truck ranges from 12.5m to 29.0m.

The D8-774 Mining Truck is fully electric powered (no diesel engines) with harvesting of retarding energy. The machine has zero carbon emissions and low noise levels.
