The Kenya National Highways Authority (KenHa) has ordered a section of businesses and landlords on Kiambu Road to demolish their structures to pave the way for the upgrade of the busy road into a dual carriageway.

According to Kiambu Senator Kimani Wamatangi, designs for the proposed dual carriageway are ready and the government is currently sourcing for financing for the 10km road project.

“We hope President Uhuru Kenyatta will get funds so that the expansion is completed before the end of his term,” Mr Wamatangi told Kiambu town residents on Tuesday.

The Kiambu dual carriageway will run from Muthiaga to Githunguri, where it will then join the Ruiru-Uplands and Githunguri-Kimende roads.

The dual carriageway aims to ease transportation for residents of Kirigiti, Thindigua, Kasarini and other areas near Kiambu town.

While many agree that the planned expansion of Kiambu Road is long-overdue, some traders have dismissed KenHa’s ‘vacate’ orders – signalling a looming wave of harsh evictions.
