Construction of the Kipevu power plant in Mombasa is now 55 per cent according to the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA).

The Sh544 million power substation, whose construction began in August 2012, is expected to boost the power supply to the port to 132Kv from 11Kv on completion next February.

KPA head of cooperate affairs Bernard Osero recently told the Star that the project, which is being undertaken by Kenya’s Power Gen Technologies and Consolidated Power Projects of Kenya, will cushion the port against frequent power failures.

Kenya Power will design and supervise the project which includes the installation of two step-down transformers.

“With the completion of this project, power blackouts at the port of Mombasa will become a thing of the past,” Mr Birir said adding that the upgrade will help KPA to meet the electricity demands of the existing facilities and future expansion projects.

In September, KPA lost about Sh70 million following a three-day power failure that hit Mombasa from September 27 to 29.
