JCB recently unveiled its largest excavator yet  – the 370X – running on a 322-horsepower Cummins engine, designed for heavy-duty digging, breaking, and other projects.

The 39.5 tonnes excavator features an upgraded undercarriage, a heavier counterweight, and increased hydraulic pressures compared to its predecessor, according to the company.

Despite the boost in power, the JCB 370X offers improved fuel efficiency and lower noise levels. This is largely due to the 8.9-litre, 6-cylinder engine reaching maximum output at just 1,700 rpm.

The engine features automatic shutdown and Auto Idle to further enhance fuel efficiency.

Performance is further enhanced by the new tandem hydraulic pump from Kawasaki, which raises hydraulic pressure by 435 psi to 5,511 psi.

Each of the two variable displacement pumps can deliver a maximum hydraulic flow of 80 gallons per minute. Additionally, the system includes a standard hydraulic cooling fan with a reverse function.

For greater performance, the company provides optional auxiliary hydraulic circuits with up to 15 settings for attachments.

According to JCB North America’s Product Manager Sam Wagstaff, the 370X marks a major step in JCB’s goal of offering a complete range of equipment for the construction industry.

“At this end of the excavator market, contractors know they need strong, powerful machines with the latest technology to get the big jobs done on time and budget,” Wagstaff said in a release.

“The JCB 370X excels in these attributes while lowering total cost of ownership and providing operators with a cab that keeps them comfortable and productive over the course of long days and challenging applications.”

JCB also increased the diameter of the hydraulic hoses and reinforced the boom and arm.

The 370X comes standard with a 21-foot monoboom, and customers can choose from three arm lengths: 8.6, 10.6, or 13.2 feet. Optional heavy-duty arms with extra crush bars and reinforcements are also available.

The standard equipment includes a new 2.75-cubic-yard XHD bucket, with an optional 3.3-cubic-yard bucket available. The bucket pin diameters have been increased as well. JCB has also introduced a new hydraulic breaker, the HM330T, specifically designed for the 370X.

The company claims it has decreased the frequency of filter changes, with hydraulic and air filters now lasting up to 2,000 hours.
