Construction of the long-awaited Sh3.58 billion Ngong Road-Naivasha Road flyover at the Junction Mall in Nairobi has begun.

According to John Cheboi, the head of communications at the Kenya Urban Roads Authority, the project aims to ease perennial traffic gridlocks on Ngong Road through grade separation.

“This project is fully funded by a concessional loan of Sh3.58 billion from the Government of Spain’s Corporate International Fund and is expected to be completed by July 2027,” Mr Cheboi stated.

Centunion Company, which built the T-Mall flyover on Lang’ata Road, is building the flyover as part of a loan deal requiring it to be done by a Spanish contractor.

The Madrid-based firm, which also erected footbridges on Raila Odinga Way and Lang’ata Road, has previously been praised by Nairobi residents for its work.

According to Mr Cheboi, the upcoming flyover is in line with the government’s plan for developing infrastructure, which he noted is essential for fostering long-term economic growth and reducing traffic in the city.

“This initiative is designed to support the country’s development and ease the movement of people and goods across Nairobi,” he added.

The new flyover is expected to reduce traffic congestion.

“With the bottlenecks eliminated at key junctions, the flyover will greatly cut down travel time for motorists, public transport users, and pedestrians alike,” Mr Cheboi said in a statement.

Safety will also be ensured by providing non-motorised transport facilities in terms of pedestrians and cyclists to travel along safely.

Modern street lighting will ensure visibility, while upgraded drainage facilities reduce the risks of flooding during the rainy season. Besides, landscaping around the project site will help enhance the urban environment.

The project will be funded through a bilateral deal between Kenya and Spain in the form of a 35-year loan with a 20-year grace period and a 0.01% interest rate.
